Our Lady of Sorrows Feast Day

September 14-16, 2012

Discerning Spirits
The Virgin Mary, who believed in the word of the Lord, did not lose her faith in God when she saw her Son rejected, abused and crucified. Rather she remained beside Jesus, suffering and praying, until the end. And she saw the radiant dawn of His Resurrection. Let us learn from her to witness to our faith with a life of humble service, ready to personally pay the price of
staying faithful to the Gospel of love and truth, certain that nothing that we do will be lost.
— Pope Benedict XVI, Angelus - September 13, 2009

The seven founders of the Servite Order, in 1239, took up the sorrows of Mary, standing under the Cross, as the principal devotion of their order. Its object was exclusively the sorrow of Mary during the Crucifixion and Death of Christ. OSMM's Spiritual Father, Fr. Peter Rookey, is a member of the Servite Order.

Speakers and Presenters

Matthew Baute is an inspirational singer/songwriter and liturgical musician with a gentle spirit that is reflected in the style of music he plays, helping to shine a light of hope into wounded hearts.

Matthew serves as music director at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Saint Ann, Missouri. He is frequently called upon to provide music for liturgies, retreats, and conferences throughout the Archdiocese of St. Louis. Over the past few years Matthew has come to greatly admire the prayerfulness of Gregorian chant, and he is currently focused on composing sacred music for the liturgy. With his wife Leah and new son Gregory, he strives to lead a simple, prayerful life in the midst of the busyness of the world, giving witness that God is still whispering an invitation of love to every heart.
